E-learning development usually is a team process. Most of you will come across the situation that, besides you, different subject matter experts within a company are involved. Subject matter experts play a very important part in the development process. However, most subject matter experts don’t have instructional design skills. This fact makes the process a bit complicated. Usually the question arises: how much involvement do I really want?
Partners have consulted me to address this issue a number of times. I suggest them to involve a subject matter expert by inviting him for an external review. In this way he can see, and comment on, the developed content without being able to make changes. Once the subject matter expert needs to be more involved, easygenerator offers another fitting solution.
We added a role and rights system to easygenerator. This system grants different rights to different roles. Easygenerator has the following roles: ‘content editor’, ‘course editor’, ‘developer’, ‘publisher’, ‘customer administrator’ and ‘administrator’. Each role will only show that specific functionality to each user, that this user needs in his or her role. In the situation as described above, I would choose to assign the subject matter expert the role of content editor. This role gives the right to change and add text and images to pages, but not to create or delete pages. This user can add comments and create tasks in the workflow system. Ideal for a client that has all the domain knowledge, but little knowledge about e-Learning.
Once your subject matter expert has better understanding of e-Learning on top of their domain knowledge, you could grant him the role ‘course editor’. He can do anything a content editor can, and besides he can also add, rename, move or delete pages. Because of the combination of our role model and workflow and task system, easygenerator is the pre-eminent tool to create e-Learning especially if clients and subject matter experts are involved in the development process.
Because e-learning development usually is a team process easygenerator has a very simple but powerful way of managing your tasks. The essence is that you can assign one or more tasks to yourself or somebody else. You can add a due date and a comment to each task. These tasks appear in the task list of the assigned person, sorted on due date. From this list you can go to the task related pages straightaway. When you are done with your task you can mark the task as ‘processed’. It is such a simple tool but highly effective.
Besides this, our workflow functionality offers you the possibility to add comments to each page: comments for your own use or for others. This gives the involved subject matter experts the possibility to comment, without making changes. All comments can carry a status (Not processed, In process, Processed). Comments can be edited and deleted.
