“I am excited to see what easygenerator has created. Here’s a tool that encourages proper eLearning design and development by tying together the important elements of learning: set up your objectives, deliver your learning in small nuggets, and test learners. The interface is inviting and simple and best of all, easygenerator is free! It takes into account modern needs, such as HTML5 and Tin Can tracking, and does a lot of the work for you. While it doesn’t replace more powerful tools at the moment, I welcome easygenerator’s new tool as a wonderful way of ensuring better learning occurs.” Joe Ganci, e-Learning Software Expert
Over the years, there have been many different theories of how employees should learn in their role within a company. Even though most tend to rise in popularity before fading away, many experts believe that the 70:20:10 model is the best we have ever seen. As a model, it describes the percentage of which the three main types of learning can occur – experience, social, and formal.
As we can see, the model suggests that experience in the role is the most advantageous type of learning and therefore makes up for 70% of the learning that occurs. Furthermore, 20% is taken by talking to colleagues and working with them on a day-to-day basis. Finally we have formal learning and training which accounts for just 10%. When compared to other models we have seen, this is vastly different and as a result, formal training is starting to take more of a backseat in the workplace.
70%: Experiential – This describes all learning and development that occurs by simply working within the role, completing day-to-day tasks, hitting challenges set by employers, and practice.
20%: Social – Here, learning and development will come from coaching from colleagues as well as personal networks and working on collaborative projects with other people in the business. In this section, more experienced members of a team can give advice and suggestions of how to complete certain tasks.
10%: Formal – In the final section, this is learning that can be achieved via formal studies and courses put on by the employer. For example, each member of staff may be asked to attend a course or event in order to enhance their skill set.
