Synthesia makes some of the most realistic AI avatar video available, and it holds the largest review base in this comparison. It also puts quizzes, SCORM export, 1-click translation, and live team collaboration on its Enterprise plan. Which alternative fits depends on which of those features you need, and on which plan you can get it.
Key takeaways
- The training features sit on Enterprise. Synthesia’s help center states that quizzes and SCORM export are available on the Enterprise plan only, and its plans page lists 1-click translation into 80+ languages, live team collaboration, and SAML/SSO at that level too.
- Credits meter every plan below Enterprise. Synthesia describes credits as one shared pool for every AI feature, from video and dubbing to surveys, with a fixed allowance per plan.
- Synthesia now sells roleplay practice. Its Sessions release introduces avatars that hold real conversations with learners, then coach and score them, with learner seats available on any plan.
- Avatar quality is where Synthesia leads. Across 2,809 G2 reviews, ease of use appears in 990 and realistic avatars in 788. Few tools here match that evidence base.
Three things push training teams to replace Synthesia
Synthesia is an AI video platform from Synthesia Limited. You write or import a script, and an AI avatar presents it in one of 160+ languages and voices. A piano-learning app shares the name and fills part of the search results for “Synthesia alternatives,” and this article covers the AI video company.
The product goes beyond video. It includes an AI Screen Recorder on every plan, interactive buttons and branching below Enterprise, and a new Sessions product for roleplay practice and avatar-led surveys. Synthesia states that it is trusted by over 90% of Fortune 100 companies, which is a vendor claim we could not verify independently. Recent updates added avatar sharing across a workspace and previews of a single scene with a fully animated avatar.
Three reasons come up repeatedly when L&D teams start looking elsewhere.
The training features sit on the top plan. Quizzes, SCORM export, 1-click translation, live team collaboration, and SAML/SSO all sit on Enterprise. A team on Starter or Pro can make an interactive video, but it cannot report a quiz result to a Learning Management System (LMS).
Credits meter the work. Every plan below Enterprise comes with a credit allowance that video minutes, dubbing, and surveys all draw from. A team that produces more video in a busy quarter spends credits faster.
Some reviewers find the avatars limiting. On G2, avatar limitations come up in 443 reviews, AI limitations in 372, and limited avatars in 314.
That last point matters for training. In TechSmith’s 2024 Video Viewer Trends Report, 87% of respondents said they prefer a real person over an AI avatar or animated character in instructional video. TechSmith makes Camtasia, which appears in this list, so read that as a vendor’s survey.
Budgets add pressure too. Fosway Group’s Digital Learning Realities research 2025 found L&D spend static at best and headcount under pressure, which makes an enterprise upgrade harder to justify for one feature.
We cover the two-product comparison in our Easygenerator and Synthesia head-to-head, and we compare avatar tools in our AI avatar video software article and presentation tools in our video presentation software article.
How we evaluated Synthesia alternatives
We scored each tool on four criteria. The same four criteria run through the comparison table and the sub-headings inside every entry below.
Presenter and avatar range. Who or what presents the video, from an AI avatar to a real person or an animated character, and how much choice you have.
Training output and LMS delivery. Whether questions sit inside the training, and what reaches your LMS through SCORM or Experience API (xAPI), on which plan.
Update path. What a change costs, including whether you edit a script without a new production cycle and whether the update reaches learners without a new upload.
Localization at scale. How many languages the tool supports, on which plan, and what travels with a translation. We compare translation tools in depth in our video translation software article and captioning tools in our captioning software comparison.
How we graded the two deciding criteria
The High, Medium, and Low bands in the table are ours, and here is what earns each one.
For training output, High means questions sit inside the training and SCORM export is available on a plan a team can buy without an enterprise contract. Medium means SCORM or quizzes exist, but only on an enterprise or agency contract, or the package cannot carry a question. None found means we found no SCORM or xAPI export in the vendor’s published material.
For update path, High means you edit without a new production cycle and the change reaches the LMS in place. Medium means one of the two. Low means every change needs a new production and a new upload.
A High band is not automatically better for every buyer. A team that only publishes video to an intranet gains nothing from a High training score, and a team that never updates a video gains little from a High update score. Read each column against your actual requirements.
Ownership disclosure
Easygenerator is our own product, and we publish this article. We reviewed the other seven tools from their public G2 profiles and their own published plan, product, and help center pages, all accessed on October 1, 2026.
What we deliberately did not score
We did not score price. Vendors in this category charge by seat, by credit, or by plan tier, and any figure we printed would be out of date before you read it. Check each vendor directly.
We did not score avatar realism against a fixed benchmark, because we have not tested it under controlled conditions. We report what vendors publish and what reviewers say.
We also did not use any vendor’s competitor comparison pages as evidence about a third party. Where we cite a vendor, we cite what they publish about their own product.
We gave full entries to five tools and short entries to two more. Several tools you may have seen on other lists are out, and here is why.
- ElevenLabs generates voice, not video
- AKOOL and VEED appear in our HeyGen alternatives comparison
- D-ID and DeepBrain AI Studios focus on avatar generation with thinner training features
- Descript, Clipchamp, and Loom record real footage, and we cover them in our Camtasia alternatives and screen recording software comparisons
- Piano-learning apps such as Openthesia share the Synthesia name and solve a different problem
- Free and open-source tools are out, because the enterprise buyers this article is written for cannot run compliance training on unsupported software
Which part of Synthesia you are replacing
Synthesia does several jobs, so “alternative” means different things to different buyers. Match your situation to one of these three groups before you read any entry.

Comparison table of Synthesia and 7 alternatives
| Tool | Presenter and avatar range | Training output and LMS delivery | Update path | Localization at scale | G2 rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Synthesia (baseline) | 125+ to 240+ stock avatars by plan, personal avatars from Pro | Medium, buttons and branching below Enterprise, quizzes and SCORM on Enterprise only | High on Enterprise, a republish updates the LMS | 160+ languages and voices, 1-click translation into 80+ on Enterprise | 4.6/5 from 2,809 reviews |

| Pictory | AI avatars, custom avatars on Professional | Medium, quizzes and SCORM on Enterprise | Not graded | AI voices in 29 languages | 4.6/5 from 81 reviews |
| invideo | AI avatars and generated footage | None found | Not graded | Not graded | 4.2/5 from 183 reviews |
All G2 ratings and review counts come from each tool’s G2 product profile, verified on October 1, 2026. Counts move as reviews are added, so pages we published earlier may show different figures. Pictory appears on G2 as Pictory AI, and its earlier profile URL no longer resolves. We scored the two short entries on fewer criteria than the full entries, so “Not graded” means we did not assess that column, not that the tool lacks the feature.
Where each training feature becomes available, tool by tool
This is the question that decides most L&D shortlists, so it gets its own table. Every entry reflects each vendor’s own published documentation on October 1, 2026.
| Tool | SCORM available from | Questions inside the training | Translation into many languages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Easygenerator | Every plan | Every plan, in the same course as the video | 75 languages in one player |
| Colossyan | Professional, capped at 5 exports a month | Free Starter plan | Auto translations from the free plan, capped by plan |
| HeyGen | Business | Business | 175+ languages and dialects from Creator |
| Camtasia | Essentials | Essentials | Pro, in 7 languages |
| Synthesia | Enterprise only | Enterprise only for quizzes | Enterprise for 1-click translation |
| Pictory | Enterprise | Enterprise | AI voices in 29 languages |
| Vyond | Enterprise and Agency | Not possible on any plan | Professional, in 95 languages |
The table makes two things visible that a feature list does not. Four tools here put SCORM and questions below an enterprise contract, namely Easygenerator, Colossyan, HeyGen, and Camtasia. And Synthesia’s strongest training features cluster on one plan, which is why the plan decision often matters more than the tool decision.
Get LMS delivery and questions without an enterprise contract
1. Easygenerator
Easygenerator is a cloud e-learning authoring tool that helps organizations create company-tailored training at enterprise scale. EasyVideo is its AI video product, available as a powerful addition to the suite.
Easygenerator answers the Synthesia question from the other direction. Synthesia builds a video and adds training features on its top plan. Easygenerator builds a course, and the video is one asset inside it.
Presenter and avatar range
EasyVideo includes 155+ AI avatars, AI narration, and scene templates with your branding applied. Authors can describe the presenter they need and generate a custom AI avatar, then save it to My avatars for reuse. Screen and camera recording sit inside the editor, so a real person can present too. Upload a PowerPoint deck in any language, and each slide becomes a scene with a drafted script.
Training output and LMS delivery
High. Quizzes, fill-in-the-blank questions, and true or false checks sit in the same course as the video. Publishing covers manual SCORM, dynamic SCORM, and xAPI, plus native integrations with Cornerstone and LearnUpon, on every plan. Courses published as SCORM 2004 send question-level results to your LMS.
For roleplay practice, EasyCoach, built by the same team, is available as a powerful addition to the suite. Since August 2026, EasyCoach roleplays run in 70+ languages, per our product updates.
Update path
High. You update a single scene in a longer video, and the AI voiceover regenerates narration from an edited script. Dynamic SCORM pushes the change into the LMS with no re-upload. Since September 2026, every video lives in the EasyVideo Workspace, so one video can sit in several courses. Since July 2026, co-authors edit the same video in real time.
Localization at scale
One step produces a video in 75 languages, with translated script and voice. Since October 2026, all language versions share one player and one embed code. Learners switch language in the player, and inside an Easygenerator course the video plays in the course language.
Standout features
- Quizzes, dynamic SCORM, and xAPI on every plan
- One multilingual player for every language version
- Custom AI avatars saved to My avatars
- Scene-level updates with AI voiceover from an edited script
- Real-time co-authoring with scene locking
Pros
- The only tool here with LMS delivery and question-level results on every plan
- Subject-matter experts produce publishable training without editing skills
- No credits to manage for video creation
- Questions, video, and learning analytics sit in one course, for measurable learning outcomes
Cons
- 155+ stock avatars against Synthesia’s 240+ on Enterprise
- Custom avatars are fictional presenters, with no avatars of real employees
- EasyVideo and EasyCoach come as additions to the suite and are not part of the core authoring license
Best for
- Enterprises of 1,000 employees and up with distributed content creation
- L&D teams that need SCORM without an enterprise contract
- Global teams that maintain one video in many languages
- Training that pairs video with questions and practice
G2 rating. 4.7 out of 5 from 178 reviews.
The number of people who can build and update training matters more than avatar count once training scales. Morningstar grew training coverage from 5,200 to 11,500 employees across 34 countries, and more than 400 internal experts now build content in place of a central design team. Kevin Seifert, Global Head of Learning and Development at Morningstar, said, “You can put Easygenerator in someone’s hands, and they can start building courses right away.” Read the full Morningstar customer story.
2. Colossyan
Colossyan is an AI video platform for training and enablement teams. Its plans page describes it as one platform for video and courses, with avatars, interactive video, and SCORM export on its paid plans.
Colossyan is the closest match in this comparison for a team that wants Synthesia’s format with training features lower down the plan list.
Presenter and avatar range
Colossyan builds video from AI avatars and slide-based scenes, with multiple avatars per scene for dialogue and custom avatars from the free plan. G2 reviewers cite ease of use in 212 reviews and realistic avatars in 128.
Training output and LMS delivery
High. Colossyan includes 10 interactive videos a month on the free Starter plan and 15 on Professional, and it supports course creation on every plan. SCORM export for videos and courses starts on Professional at 5 exports a month, and Enterprise removes the cap.
Update path
Medium. You edit the script and regenerate scenes without a new recording. We found no statement that a Professional SCORM package updates in the LMS without a new upload.
Localization at scale
Colossyan lists 120+ supported languages. Auto translations cap at 15 a month on Starter and 20 on Professional, with no cap on Enterprise.
Standout features
- Interactive video and courses in one platform
- SCORM export for videos and courses from Professional
- Multiple avatars per scene
- 120+ supported languages
Pros
- Questions inside the video from the free plan
- SCORM without an enterprise contract
- Built for training and enablement teams
Cons
- The Professional plan caps SCORM at 5 exports a month
- Reviewers raise avatar limitations in 54 reviews and a lack of emotion in 31
- Auto translations are capped below Enterprise
Where Colossyan beats Easygenerator. Questions and branching sit inside the video itself, which suits teams whose output is standalone video. Its conversation scenes with multiple avatars also go further than ours for dialogue between two speakers.
Best for
- L&D teams whose output is mostly avatar video
- Teams that need SCORM without an enterprise contract
- Scenario dialogue with two presenters on screen
G2 rating. 4.6 out of 5 from 495 reviews.

Keep AI avatars, with a different plan structure
3. HeyGen
HeyGen is an AI avatar video platform, and it is the tool most often compared with Synthesia. “HeyGen vs Synthesia” draws 900 US searches a month in each word order.
HeyGen fits teams that want to stay with AI avatars and move SCORM and quizzes down from an enterprise contract to a team plan.
Presenter and avatar range
HeyGen’s plans page lists 700+ stock video avatars on its Creator and Pro plans and 500+ on Free. Earlier comparisons that quote a single avatar count for HeyGen usually quote the paid figure. G2 reviewers cite ease of use in 693 reviews, quality in 513, and realistic avatars in 486.
Training output and LMS delivery
High. HeyGen’s help center states that SCORM export, xAPI, and LMS embed are available on the Business and Enterprise plans. Quizzes and branching video built in AI Studio carry into the SCORM package. The individual plans, Free, Creator, and Pro, do not include SCORM.
Update path
High, on Business. HeyGen’s SCORM guide describes Auto-SCORM, which hosts the video on HeyGen so changes appear in the LMS without a new package.
Localization at scale
The plans page lists 175+ languages and dialects from the Creator plan, and 30+ languages on Free.
Standout features
- 700+ stock video avatars on paid plans
- SCORM, xAPI, and LMS embed on Business
- Quizzes and branching inside the SCORM package
- Auto-SCORM for updates without a new upload
Pros
- The highest G2 rating among the full entries, at 4.8 out of 5
- LMS delivery on a team plan, below an enterprise contract
- The largest stock avatar library here
Cons
- No SCORM or quizzes on the individual plans
- Reviewers raise avatar limitations in 152 reviews
- A video tool, so courses and other content still live elsewhere
Where HeyGen beats Easygenerator. Avatar range, with 700+ stock video avatars on paid plans against our 155+, and language coverage, with 175+ languages and dialects against our 75.
Best for
- Teams that want avatar video with SCORM on a team plan
- Organizations that need a large stock avatar library
- Training delivered as standalone video in many languages
G2 rating. 4.8 out of 5 from 1,973 reviews.
How we checked. G2 profile, HeyGen’s plans page, its help center article on LMS delivery, and its SCORM guide, all accessed October 1, 2026. See our HeyGen alternatives comparison for the reverse view.
Change the format to a real presenter or animation
4. Camtasia
Camtasia is a screen recorder and video editor from TechSmith, sold as part of the Camtasia Suite.
Camtasia fits teams that want a real person back on screen. “What are the key differences between Synthesia and Camtasia?” appears in Google’s “People also ask” box for this topic, and the answer is the presenter.
Presenter and avatar range
You record yourself on camera next to your screen, with multitrack recording at up to 4K and 60 frames per second. TechSmith’s avatar page lists 49 AI avatars, available on the Pro plan.
Training output and LMS delivery
High. Quizzes and SCORM export come with the Essentials plan, per TechSmith’s store page, and TechSmith’s LMS tutorial states that viewers’ responses and raw scores reach the LMS.
Update path
Medium. Text-based editing cuts a recording through its transcript. The SCORM package carries the video file, so a changed video means a new package and a new upload.
Localization at scale
TechSmith’s voice translator page lists 7 languages, with script translation and dubbing on Pro.
Standout features
- A real presenter on camera, recorded with the screen
- Quizzes and SCORM from Essentials
- Cursor effects and SmartFocus zoom
- 49 AI avatars on Pro
Pros
- Quiz responses reach the LMS on a mid-tier plan
- 1,765 G2 reviews behind a 4.6 rating
- The deepest recording and editing in this comparison
Cons
- Translation covers 7 languages
- A changed video needs a new package
- The editor is a desktop application
Where Camtasia beats Easygenerator. Multitrack recording, cursor effects, and automatic zoom, which we do not offer.
Best for
- Software training presented by a real person
- Teams that want quizzes in a standalone video
- Content where viewers trust a human presenter more than an avatar
G2 rating. 4.6 out of 5 from 1,765 reviews.
How we checked. G2 profile and TechSmith’s store page, LMS tutorial, and feature pages, all accessed October 1, 2026. We go deeper in our Camtasia alternatives comparison.
5. Vyond
Vyond is an animated video platform from GoAnimate, Inc., built around characters, props, and AI avatars.
Vyond fits teams that want to move away from photorealistic presenters entirely. Animated characters act out a scenario, which suits soft skills and compliance training. Vyond’s own figures for its customer base disagree, since its FAQ cites more than 17,000 companies while the vendor description on its G2 profile cites more than 20,000.
Presenter and avatar range
Vyond’s help center lists four asset styles, Business Friendly, Whiteboard, Contemporary, and Storybook, plus a Character Creator. Its AI avatars page lists 1,300+ avatar options.
Training output and LMS delivery
Medium. Vyond’s help center states that SCORM downloads are available to Enterprise and Agency users only, and a second help article states that learner interactivity inside a Vyond video is not possible.
Update path
Medium. You edit scenes in Vyond Studio without recording anything again, and a changed video goes back out as a new export.
Localization at scale
Instant translation into 95 languages starts on the Professional plan, per Vyond’s plan comparison.
Standout features
- Four animation styles and a Character Creator
- 1,300+ avatar options
- Translation into 95 languages from Professional
- FedRAMP certification through the Government plan
Pros
- The widest animation range in this comparison
- Reviewers cite ease of use in 174 reviews and versatility in 85
- No human likeness on screen, which some audiences prefer
Cons
- SCORM on Enterprise and Agency only
- No questions inside a video on any plan
- Reviewers raise limited customization in 43 reviews
Where Vyond beats Easygenerator. Animated characters and a Character Creator, neither of which we offer.
Best for
- Soft skills and scenario-based training
- Audiences that respond better to animation than to avatars
- Public sector teams that need FedRAMP
G2 rating. 4.7 out of 5 from 550 reviews.
How we checked. G2 profile and Vyond’s plan comparison, FAQ, product pages, and help center, all accessed October 1, 2026. We go deeper in our Vyond alternatives comparison.
Two more Synthesia alternatives worth a shortlist slot
These two did not get full entries, and each one answers a narrower question.
6. Pictory
What it is. Pictory turns scripts, articles, and long videos into short video, with stock footage, AI voices, and AI avatars. Its plans page lists AI voices in 29 languages and custom avatars on the Professional plan.
Best for. Teams that turn written content into short videos quickly.
Why it is in the second tier. Pictory’s quizzes, knowledge checks, and SCORM export sit on its Enterprise plan for 10 or more users, through its Pictory Central hosting, which is the same gate that pushes teams away from Synthesia. It holds 4.6 out of 5 from 81 reviews, and G2’s earlier Pictory profile no longer resolves.
7. invideo
What it is. invideo is a credit-based AI video generator, with tools for text to video, AI avatars, and ad creation.
Best for. Marketing teams that produce short promotional and social video from prompts.
Why it is in the second tier. invideo is built for marketing video, and as of October 1, 2026 we found no SCORM export or quizzes on its plans page. It holds 4.2 out of 5 from 183 reviews.

| Keep avatars and get SCORM on a team plan | HeyGen |
| Choose from the largest stock avatar library | HeyGen |
| Put questions inside a standalone avatar video | Colossyan |
| Script dialogue between two avatars | Colossyan |

When Synthesia remains the right choice
Synthesia stays the better option in several situations, and we say so plainly on a page like this one.
Its avatars and its evidence base lead this comparison. Synthesia lists 240+ stock avatars and unlimited personal avatars on Enterprise, 5 personal avatars on Pro, and 160+ languages and voices on every plan. Its September 2026 updates added avatar sharing across a workspace and previews of a single animated scene. Its Sessions release adds personalized roleplays, custom scenarios, and insight reports on where learners struggle.
Its reviewers agree. Across 2,809 G2 reviews, ease of use appears in 990, quality in 809, and realistic avatars in 788. Ben R., a VP of Learning Strategy, wrote in an August 2026 G2 review that as an instructional designer he values updating a script and a scene to generate a new version without scheduling a recording session.
If avatar quality is the deliverable, if your organization already holds an enterprise contract, and if you want roleplay practice from the same vendor, staying with Synthesia is a defensible call.
How to move Synthesia videos into a tracked course
You do not have to rebuild everything at once. Synthesia’s paid plans let you download your videos, and Easygenerator accepts video files. A downloaded video can sit inside a course while your team adds knowledge checks around it, which gives an existing avatar video questions and tracking without a new production cycle.
Those questions cost little in completion. Across 45,214 Easygenerator courses with at least five learner results, courses with four or more questions completed at 71.6%, against 72.3% for courses with one to three. Of 783,646 learner-course combinations with at least one failed attempt, 70.1% ended in a pass. Keep each video short while you move it, too, since courses under five minutes completed at 85.5% against 70.6% for courses over fifteen minutes. The figures come from an Easygenerator dataset of 213,660 courses and 22.9 million learner-course interactions between June 2025 and June 2026, and they describe activity on our platform, not the e-learning industry as a whole. See do knowledge checks reduce course completion rates and the 2026 e-learning benchmark report for the full method.
Plan the languages before you move anything, because translation is where most migrations slow down. Jon Withrington, Global Customer and Capability Education Manager at Keune Haircosmetics, described his team’s main lesson in our March 2026 webinar on localization.
“I think the better you plan and map this out, the stronger the deployment will be.”

Ask one local reviewer per language to check each translated video before it goes live.
Final thoughts
Synthesia built some of the most realistic avatar video in the category, and it added roleplay practice on top. It also placed most of its training features on one plan, which explains most of the reasons a training team looks elsewhere.
Start from the feature you need and the plan you can buy. If you want to keep avatars with SCORM on a team plan, look at HeyGen. If you want questions inside the video without an enterprise contract, look at Colossyan. If you want to change the format, Camtasia brings a real person back on screen and Vyond swaps avatars for animation. If you want SCORM, questions, and in-place updates on every plan, with the video inside a course, Easygenerator does that.
