Why one completion rate hides two different stories
The key point. Completion without assessment measures arrival. Completion with assessment measures performance. Putting both numbers in the same column compares two different things.
Courses with no questions on the Easygenerator platform completed at 90.7%. Courses with 1 to 3 questions completed at 72.3%, and courses with 4 or more completed at 71.6%.

A course with no questions counts as complete the moment a learner clicks through to the end, because there is no bar to clear. A graded course counts as complete only when a learner passes. Those are not the same achievement, and a dashboard that puts a 90.7% next to a 72.3% makes the ungated course look like the stronger one when it has simply asked less of the learner.
Why the first question costs so much and the rest cost almost nothing

Four in five of the apparent failures in a graded course are people who did the work and then fell short of the pass mark. That is a very different problem from a learner who lost interest halfway through, and it calls for a very different fix. A course with a weak completion number because of a strict pass mark needs a look at the assessment or the content that leads into it. Track reach directly, rather than estimating it from a completion rate
The key point. The benchmark report does not publish a single reach percentage, and this article will not manufacture one. What it does show, using only the published figures, is that most of the completion gap in a graded course comes from people who reached the end, not from people who quit.
The drop-off data covers exactly two groups, courses with no questions and courses with questions. It does not break the “with questions” group down further into 1 to 3 versus 4 or more, so this article won’t either. Within those two groups, 80% of the 280,033 non-completing learners in graded courses had already reached the end of the content. In ungated courses, only 53% of the 41,698 non-completing learners got that far.
That comparison, 80% against 53%, stands on its own without needing to be folded into one blended number. It says a graded course’s lower completion rate is doing something closer to measuring performance, while an ungated course’s higher rate is doing more of the work of measuring simple arrival.
If you want an actual reach percentage for your own reporting, rather than an estimate built from aggregate figures, the reliable way to get one is to pull it directly from learner-level analytics. That means the share of learners who reached the final section, tracked separately from whether they passed. Easygenerator’s own dashboard reports where learners stop within a course at the section level, which is the kind of raw, per-learner tracking a reach number needs. A completion rate alone, pulled from an aggregate report rather than raw records, cannot be reverse-engineered into one reliably.
Most learners who fail an assessment come back and pass
The key point. A failing grade acts as a pause in most cases, not an exit.
Among 783,646 learner-course combinations on the Easygenerator platform where a learner failed at least one attempt, 70.1% eventually passed. Another 23.0% failed and never returned. The remaining 6.9% is the group in between, learners who returned for at least one more attempt but had not passed by the end of the 12-month measurement window. The benchmark report states this same group differently in its own callout, that 77% of learners returned for another attempt (100% minus the 23.0% who never returned), and only 70.1% of the full group eventually passed, so the gap between 77% and 70.1% is exactly that in-between group.

The 23.0% who never come back are worth a separate look, because the fix depends entirely on why they stopped. A retake that needs a manager to unlock it is a process problem. A retake that nobody told the learner about is a communication problem. Neither shows up in a single completion number, and both get lost in the noise if reach and pass rate stay merged into one figure.

What this framing protects
A completion rate that drops from 90% to 72% after a team adds a graded quiz looks, on paper, like a step backward. Split into reach and pass rate, the same change reads correctly. Engagement barely moved, and the course started measuring something it did not measure before.
What this data cannot tell you
No one ran this as a controlled test. Teams choose whether to grade a course, we didn’t assign it. Graded courses skew toward regulated or technical subjects and mandatory programs, so treat this as a pattern in how teams already work, not a lab result.
The drop-off data has two buckets, not three. 80% and 53% describe “no questions” against “with questions” as a whole. The source data doesn’t break the graded group down further into 1-3 versus 4-plus, so this article stops at the same line.
“Where a learner stopped” is a proxy, not a click log. It’s calculated as the last section visited divided by total section count, an approximation of position rather than a timestamped record.
Passing a course on a given day isn’t the same claim as remembering it later. Reach and pass rate both describe what happened during the course. Neither one describes retention afterward.
