Introduction

DEME is a global leader in offshore energy, dredging, marine infrastructure, and environmental projects. The company can build on nearly 150 years of experience and is a front-runner in innovation and new technologies. DEME’s vision is to work towards a sustainable future by offering solutions for global challenges: climate change, a growing population and urbanization, increasing maritime trade, and environmental issues. With a team of more than 5,800 highly skilled professionals and one of the most advanced fleets in the world, DEME is well-positioned to tackle even the most complex projects. The company invests in structured learning journeys—from safety and technical perspectives to leadership and digital skills to support this. These are tied to career paths that help employees grow within the organization. Nathalie De Muer, HR Specialist at DEME, manages the functional side of the company’s two core learning platforms: Easygenerator and Cornerstone. Together, these tools enable DEME to build and deliver training that meets both operational and personal development needs.

The challenge

DEME operates in a high-risk, highly regulated industry where safety and compliance are a daily priority. Employees must complete the right training at the right time to meet legal and operational standards. This can become a significant challenge when you have a global workforce. Each country and project has different protocols, certifications, and compliance requirements. Ensuring every employee stays on track requires clear assignments, reminders, and proof of completion. The HR team needed a way to automate reminders for certifications that had to be renewed.

But compliance was only one part of DEME’s learning strategy. Just as important was supporting career development. The company wanted to offer training that helped people build long-term skills and knowledge. That meant creating and delivering learning that was accessible and easy to update. At the time, much of DEME’s training was still delivered face to face. This made scaling difficult and added time and travel costs, especially for international teams. Moreover, there were limitations in creating digital training. To move forward, DEME needed a better way to create content in-house, a smoother way to deliver it, and a smarter way to track it.

The solution

First, DEME introduced Cornerstone as its learning management system. Cornerstone became its central platform for assigning training, sending reminders, tracking completions, and generating reports. The HR team can easily assign training by role, location, or department. Automated reminders help team members stay compliant without manual follow-up. But while Cornerstone helped organize and deliver training, DEME still needed a better, more scalable way to create it. That’s where Easygenerator came in. DEME introduced Easygenerator to allow employees across the organization to create and share their own e-learning content. Now, training creation is no longer limited to the L&D team.

The results
500+
courses created

Since adopting Easygenerator, DEME has enabled employees to create training themselves without needing help from the HR team. What started with a single department has grown into a company-wide approach. DEME now has 246 authors and has created over 500 e-learning courses in Easygenerator. Courses that used to require classroom time are now available online. This saves time and makes training accessible from anywhere. Content is easier to update, and teams can make changes themselves without any bottlenecks. Cornerstone continues to serve as DEME’s central learning platform. It ensures that every employee receives the right training based on their job, location, or certification status. With automated reminders and detailed reporting, the HR team can stay on top of compliance without chasing down learners.

How DEME did it

DEME already had Cornerstone in place as a strong learning management system. What they needed was a better way to create and maintain content. Easygenerator filled that gap. DEME looked for a more flexible way to train team members without needing repeated in-person sessions. Once one team showed what was possible, other departments quickly got involved. Employees saw how anyone could quickly create, share, and update content on Easygenerator. The process is now owned by employees across many departments, not just L&D. People can create their own training with Easygenerator, and Cornerstone delivers it to the right learners.
