APCO Institute is the only not-for-profit educational institute that serves the learning and development needs of the public safety communications industry. Because APCO Institute is a not-for-profit educational institute, it has the ability to bring affordable options and certification, such as train-the trainer programs and in-house training, that traditional for-profit training businesses can’t or won’t.
APCO Institute is overseen, managed and operated by industry experts with years of experience. Through APCO’s 30,000 strong membership, we stay current with industry issues, needs and standards. Because our members all work in their respective communications agencies each day, their needs and concerns drive the activity of APCO Institute.
As a professional staff member of APCO, I am glad I can support the work of the Institute. I was granted my doctorate in education (Ed.D.) in July of 2016, culminating eight years of work and research. I came to APCO in 2014 after working in academia (City University of New York – LaGuardia Community College) and as a contractor to the federal and local government, providing training programs to US military and New York City law enforcement personnel.
Our biggest challenge is to meet the diverse training needs of our students and to do so in an engaging and effective manner. The APCO Institute serves over 20,000 students a year with a large percentage of that number choosing online courses. The Institute offers a catalog of over 20 titles. These courses include distinct disciplines, such as Fire Service Communications, Law Enforcement Communications, and Emergency Medical Dispatch. We offer courses in a variety of formats, ranging from six-week courses to shorter continuing education options. We have courses designed for both US and Canadian students as well as a growing number of courses available in Spanish.
Easygenerator has brought a new and exciting dimension to our courses. Because our learning platform is asynchronous, we always seek ways to offer more interactivity to our students with the aim of eliciting the most engagement from them. The SCORM packages we can now create in-house allow us to combine the visuals of PowerPoint with audio and MP4 video in a seamless manner. We include “knowledge checks” in each module to summarize the points covered. We can link the course presentation (within the SCORM package) to reading packages, hand-in assignments, discussion forums, and the final quiz outside the package. They all fit together within the course so the Easygenerator content pairs up with the other coursework all within the Moodle platform. I also want to say that Easygenerator staff has always been spot-on with customer service.
Before Easygenerator we worked with outside consultants to create SCORM packages. This required a bidding process leading to the award of a contract. The outside consultant was a major expense for our budget. Now, with Easygenerator we can create the SCORM 1.2 content within a matter of days with expenses limited to staff time.
