New: Translation service for e-Learning courses

The next generation authoring platform: Translation service

This blog is the first blog on a new series: 'the next generation authoring platform'. In November easygenerator will release version 8. In this series of posts we will discuss some new features of easygenerator, which we believe are next generation authoring features.

Translation of e-Learning courses is always a labor intensive and costly exercise while with the ongoing globalization the demand for courses in different languages is increasing. Creating courses in different languages is a lot of work, maintaining courses in several languages is really a challenge. Easygenerator is proud to present a solution for this problem, in cooperation with L&L a reputable translation agency: our combined translation service.

You start with creating a course in easygenerator, just like any other course. Our translation service can only translate text; you need to take this into account when you use video or images. Obviously these can be quoted for and translated separately. When you want to translate this course you can request a translation, just by selecting the option 'Request translation' on a course level. You will receive a fixed-price quote from L&L for the translation by mail.

Vertaal Request

If you agree to the quote you can confirm this order by mail. L&L will start the translation.

Vertaal

Easygenerator will deliver your course in a special xml format to L&L. They will process this file and extract all content that needs to be translated. The translation software will take care of anything it already knows automatically, after that the translation is given to a human translator. L&L has a worldwide network of local native speaking translators. They can translate in any language. After the translation is finished, it is uploaded in the translation software. All new translations will be added to the translation memory and saved for later purposes. A valid easygenerator xml course file is created and uploaded into your easygenerator server. After import it is a separate course from your source course. If you started with an English course and had it translated into Chinese, you will now have two separate courses. One English, one Chinese.

Maintenance

This process is already a big improvement from most current translation processes but your biggest gain will come when you want to change your course. Now you only change the course in the main language (English in my previous example). You follow the same process as described above with one difference. Thanks to the translation memory of the software, only the new texts will be translated. This saves a lot of time (and money). After importing the newly translated file it again becomes a new course in easygenerator. And this file is completely up to date, no worries about changed pages, hyperlinks or anything. It will be an exact copy of the latest version of your source language except for the translated text. If you do regular translations of courses and need to maintain them, you can probably imagine the profits.
